What Is Bombogenesis?
When a low pressure storm strengthens extremely fast, its central pressure dropping sharply in one day. The result is often called a "bomb cyclone." In technical terms: Explosive extratropical cyclogenesis in which central pressure falls at least 24 hPa in 24 hours, adjusted by sin(latitude)/sin(60 degrees) (about 1 Bergeron); common over warm ocean currents off the US East Coast and Japan.
Also called: Bomb Cyclone, Explosive Cyclogenesis
