What Is CIN?
The amount of energy holding air back from rising, like a lid on a pot. A little can let heat build; too much keeps storms from forming. In technical terms: Convective Inhibition: the vertically integrated negative buoyancy of a lifted parcel from its origin to the level of free convection, in J/kg (reported as a negative number); magnitudes under 25 J/kg are weak, and over 100-200 J/kg strongly inhibit surface-based convection.
Also called: Convective Inhibition
