Snow Ratio In Plain English

How many inches of snow you get from one inch of melted water. Fluffy snow might be 20 to 1; wet, heavy snow might be 6 to 1.

The Technical Definition

The ratio of new snowfall depth to its liquid water equivalent; 10:1 is a rough average, but ratios range from about 5:1 to over 30:1 depending on crystal habit (dendrites grown near -12 to -18 degrees C give high ratios), riming, wind, and melting.
