A dangerous rise of seawater pushed ashore by a hurricane's winds, the deadliest part of many hurricanes. In technical terms: An abnormal rise in water level above the predicted astronomical tide, generated primarily by wind stress over shallow water and secondarily by low pressure; storm tide is the combination of surge and tide, and surges can exceed 6 m (20 ft).
