What Is Mixed-Layer CAPE?
A storm-energy estimate based on the average air in the lowest part of the atmosphere, rather than just the surface. In technical terms: CAPE computed for a parcel with mean potential temperature and mixing ratio of the lowest 100 hPa (sometimes 50 hPa), which better represents afternoon convection than a surface-based parcel.
Also called: MLCAPE
