What Is Warm Nose?

A layer of above-freezing air aloft sitting over freezing air near the ground, which causes sleet or freezing rain. In technical terms: An elevated layer of temperatures above 0 °C atop a subfreezing surface layer, appearing on a sounding as a rightward bulge of the temperature trace; its depth and maximum temperature determine melting and whether sleet or freezing rain results.
