What Is Geomagnetic Storm?
A disturbance of Earth's magnetic field caused by a blast from the Sun. It can bring auroras far south and trouble power grids, GPS and radio. In technical terms: A major disturbance of the magnetosphere from solar wind energy transfer, usually from CMEs or high-speed streams with southward Bz; rated on the NOAA G-scale from G1 (Kp 5) to G5 (Kp 9), and measured also by the Dst index.
Also called: G-Scale Storm, Solar Storm
