What Is Anvil?

In technical terms: The flat, fibrous, often wind-sheared ice-crystal outflow at the top of a mature cumulonimbus (incus supplementary feature), spreading laterally near the equilibrium level, usually close to the tropopause; can extend hundreds of kilometers downstream.
