What Is Infrared Imagery?
Satellite pictures that measure heat instead of light, so they work at night. Colder, higher cloud tops show up as brighter or more colorful. In technical terms: Imagery from thermal infrared channels (for example ABI bands 7-16, 3.9-13.3 micrometers) depicting brightness temperature; longwave window bands show surface and cloud-top temperature, while absorption bands (6.2-7.3 micrometers) sense midlevel and upper-level water vapor.
Also called: IR Imagery, IR
