What Is Shelf Cloud?

A low, wedge-shaped cloud at the front edge of a thunderstorm, marking the gust front and incoming strong winds. In technical terms: A low, horizontal, wedge-shaped accessory cloud (arcus) attached to the base of a cumulonimbus along the leading edge of the gust front, formed as warm, moist air is lifted over the outflow; typically shows rising, turbulent motion on its leading edge.
